Three Things To Consider When Hiring A Divorce Attorney

I’m Heather Quick, owner of Florida Women’s Law Group and I’m here today to talk to you about what you need to know before hiring a divorce attorney.  These are the three most important things you need to think about before taking that big step.

What you need to know:

1. Hire an attorney that focuses on divorce and family law. Do not look at attorneys that do criminal law, bankruptcy and maybe throws in a little divorce and a few other things and say they do it all.  This is not what you are looking for in divorce.  You need someone who understands the law, divorce laws and Florida laws and knows how much they can change.  They know family law judges and the other attorneys and that is in your best interest. 
2. Look for someone who is going to ask you questions. This sounds so simple.  You want someone who is going to ask you real questions about what you want.  We know you want to be divorced and you want it done now.  That is a short view and we are talking about your future.  We are talking about what your life is going to look one year from now, three years from now, when your children are grown.  The things that are decided now are going to impact your future.  That is the concern you are looking for and that long-range view that you need in an attorney.
3. You need to look for a strategy. You are not going to get a strategy the first time you meet with an attorney because they will not have enough information.  Every case is different, and the facts will not be the same as your friend’s or co-workers and it does take strategy.  These cases are won and lost on specific facts and how they apply to the law.  Ask the attorney how they are going to come up with their strategy, so you end up with where you want to be.
